Classic Motor Show Succesfull

by Tikkis

Scandinavias biggest and only indoor Show for classic cars and bikes collected 17500 visitors last weekend. 400 vehicles was inside in three halls and around old cars, trucks and motorcycles of the visitors were parked outsid. Saabworks.fi get inquiry for show beginning this year, and it was easy to say: “yes thanks, we will come”.

To be at a show or fair, a lot of work is needed. Which cars we take, how our team will look like, what will we show etc. Tommi and I get good support from Saab 99 EMS -rally team – Henri Salonen and Teemu Pinomäki. Both Tommi and Henri had a professional backround in web- and advertising companies which helped much when doing materials. Teemu and I have salesman backround and strong knowledge about professional fairs, so our team works well during weekend. Our booth looked nice, and I hope that visitors get least some Saab Spirit which newer disappear !

Saabworks.fi had three Saabs in Show; Tommi´s bullnose project, Henris`s Ex Works Tapio Rainio / Jari Vilkas 99 EMS –77 AJX-702 ( original fitted with Saab´s 16 valve belt driven EMS motor) and My Ex works Simo Lampinen 96 V4 – 75  AEU-502.

Round the corner there was also another Saab team: saab95.net with longnose twostroke 95 with Saabo caravan.

Between those two days, our cars were under huge interest by visitors. It was nice to meet old friends, mechanics who made our WorksSaab´s in the 1970`s, my old teachers from car mechanic school, AEU old drivers and many many other people. Specially stories from Saab´s glory days were interesting by rally mechanics. Thanks for all visitors!

One of the highlights was when the original AEU-502 pilots – Simo Lampinen and his Co-driver Juhani Markkanen – joined us on our booth. It was nice to discuss with such a gentlemans, and look how they enjoy the happening and were happy that their old “home” is saved and in nice shape today.

This year 2012 (maybe also 2013) we have a break with own rallying, target is more for enthusiast happenings such this Classic Motor Show. And maybe one to two Saabs will be renovated. Next happening is Saab Club of Finland old Saab meeting, WST- Hyvinkää 17th may.

Regards, Tikkis

USK-13 still under construction

Update by Gustav Juslin:

Time has run and USK-13 is still waiting to participate in a rally/race!

I can’t explain away, why I haven´t had enough time for USK-13. I have had much up with work, but I have still managed to find time for other Saabs… And one of them is a 96-75 I bought last autumn.

A friend owned this smaragdgreen 96-75, but he had to sell it because problems finding a good storage place. I have helped him to fix and repair this car in the past, so I know this Saab well. That’s why it was an easy decision for me to make, when my friend asked me if I want to buy it. I have many times said to myself that no more Saab`s but…

I think many Saabfreak know this situation oh so well.

The idea with this car was to get a little rally tuned street Saab 96. The painting was in bad condition, but the body is very good and there is no rust or welding.

During the winter the car has been repainted and fixed. The car is now ready. And we are going to try to participate in as many meetings as possible. The first meeting will be the Finish Saabclubs spring meeting.

The car will also participate in IntSaab 2012 in Belgium, but not with me at the wheel. Another friend of mine and his girlfriend will come with it to IntSaab in Belgium. They don´t have any own Saabs (yet..), so I will borrow this 96-75 to them.

And what is USK-13 situation?

The main problem was the gearbox. So I changed it to a “real” cast iron gearbox with 6:35 and SP 2. I also changed the engine, because of oil problem, to an old “little group A” engine. The question is still how this engine will work, because it is a long time since this engine has been in use. But it feels to be in good condition.

The main event that I had planned to participate in was Ice Track day in Kuru, but unfortunately I was otherwise engaged just before the event. But I am still hopefully to come out the road with USK-13 this summer!

And the story will be continued!

Other view inside rallying.

After last autumn roll over I have been busy with other things, and the car is still under construction. Meanwhile our Saab Club has a nice Ice track- event and it give good possibility to enjoy driving with yellow Rallycross V4. My co-driver has put drivers seat absolutely too near to steering wheel and it was nearly impossible to me to drive the car. Some good round I Survive lit bit slover speed, until it was time to go home. “Maybe once again” thought, and get one clubmember to co-pilot seat. Typically, driving get faster and faster in every round, and then it happens- rollover- again.. Luckuly wery fast and soft rolling back to wheel, without any damage to pilots or to technic. Some extra bodyworks in garage, after bluewhite is ready.

Week after our club icetrack I made what every rallydriver should make regularly- to be an voluntary organizer in rallyhappening. My rallymechanic is an active in local rallydrivers club, and he ask if I come with him to Valkeala F- cup rally. Our duty was timekeeping in SS2 finish. Mechanic take care official online timekeeping machine, while my work was to handle manually time keeping. This is just for security reason, if something got wrong. Amazing how close those times were when we compare automatic light/cellular timekeeping (like an WRC events) to those time I take by pushing manual button when rallycar pass the finish line. During the day I noticed also how much prework one rallyevent need. We both get own brief whit every needed instructions, timeschedule for safetycars, police car, 000- cars etc. Somebody has made a lot of work before that weekend. We rallydriver just forged it sometimes, when criticize organizator- its huge work behind every rally. I recommend everybody partake !

Saabs On Ice!

Jag gasar tills den rasar!

Jag gasar tills den rasar!

One of good rallydrivers slogan in swedish. It means like a “maximum attack until something blow up”.

Rantaralli hold on 8. October in Turku region. We get good sponsoring for one our support partner; 2 brand New Kumho- tyres to that rally. After that had we Kumho R800 175/70R15 Medium in every corner. After those 20 years old tyres I normally used it was nice to get something better. After many years by driving only 90% speed I decided to look how those new tyres really work.

Tyres Grip 100%, no more slide´s.

Maximum Attack with V4 gravel shotgun.

Maximum Attack with V4 gravel shotgun.

Tyres worked well, but driver not.

First stage was only 6km long, and I didn´t got my normally fast driving directly. End of the stage there was nice agricultural scenary with long view, one S- corner after 90 juction.

It looks like a smoots S and I took my target to next left curve with full speed by 3th gear. It was good plan, but because of long grass and rush I didn´t saw that S- curves first right corner tighten dramatically, and then it happens what should happens sometimes- Statistics Crash. I noticed that only way to survive is to hold full gas and drive via ditch back to road. Othervice good idea, but because of long period of raining in region, the ditch bank clay was wery soft and our cars left corner get sticked in full speed and we were immediately flying up. It was exciting moment indeed, but in the end of the story I can say that our “Eskimo turn” with bluewhite kayak wasn´t so successfully, so I can´t recommend it for you. “Don´t try this in our home”, or something like that.

Hungry soldier ? Maybe we forgot feed it with proper food before rally ?

Lucky Lukes

Ok, first thing after huge volt is that everything is okay with both drivers. Due to that spectators ask medical personal to come and shecked us. We had luck, but kayak is like a Californian russins now. V4 cross-flow manifold had also lucky day, nothing get broken under engine bonnet ! So now, some days after accident, it looks that we are back next year, just if we managed catch enough sponsoring.

We even got to the cover of Hanaa-magazine (14/2011)

Saab 96 USK-13 being restored

The “Semi-Works” Saab 96 USK-13 is being restored by a fellow Saab Club member Gustav. Here’s a couple of photos – hopefully Gustav gets around to writing a few lines about the car…

USK-13 is not an official Saab Works Finland Rally Car but it was built at the premises and by the same mechanics for S/T races. Later it has been used for rallying and historic racing.

Saab 96 at Turku Historic rally 17.9.2011

By Tikkis

Finnish Historic rallychampionship series continued in Turku with 85 Historic rallycars up to yearmodel -81 and totally 161 rallycars consisting of every possible class. In our tightest class 9, Group 2 cars up to 2000cc between 1970 to 1975 were 12 competitors in starting point. And between those 12, nearly ten have sometimes won in Historic rallies. Some competitors were from Sweden, which is nice thing. So it was good challenge indeed. Little bit of a disappointment that no Saab drivers from the neighbour country participated.

Turku is Cultural capital of Europe 2011, and due that Starting point was town centre by the river. Very nice and historical place. My cars first driver, Leo Kinnunen, also lives in Turku, so it was some extra boost for rallying also. Here some photos of those competitors in same class #9 in starting place:

Take a look; Some guys sitting by the rive are more interested in their Saturday hobbybottle than rallying... Or it might be that they have cultural backround and are looking at the art seiling thru. Never know....

Scruteneering was a little bit disappoining for us, because there wasn`t any noise measurement. So we still don’t know how effective my endmuffler is.

Anyway, first transport stage was nearly 50km, and our car turns all the time to right – wery strong. We have right pressure, wheel aligment was correct etc. Maybe those 20 years old remoulded rallytyres wasn´t so good anymore I thought when starting to SS1. I wasn´t wake up in that stage and shut down engine once, and also my driving was as a nightmare. Result:  17th overall in Historic.

After first stage was service and we put 2 brand new Kumho tyres in front which I got from my sponsor – the very first brand new summer rallytyres I have ever had ! Very soon in Transport stage to SS2 I regogniced a big difference; now the car go’s like a SAAB should be, straight like a train, and it reacts sharp and rapid for my any wish. In the rear we had still old Michelin M4 from late 80`s early 90´s which I have got with some other rallycar.

WOU, What a feeling with new tyres. Now I understand better those “big guys” who invest to latest tyres all the time.  Despite sometimes too fast stages we managed to increase our speed dramatically and we drove thru 9th place overall and 6th in our class. A bit surprisingly on some stages we managed also to beat one of the fastest historic rally drivers in Europe, Tony Jansson also.

Maximum attack !

Maximum attack !

Last stage, SS5 was dramatical for us when we lost brakes totally some kilometres before SS finnish. In one over 90 degree junction it was wery close that we drove thru on to a lodge wall. There were people standing on the closed road which goes straight when I noticed we haven’t any brakes in the car! To manage the situation I haven’t any other choise than try to turn my car where the SS was going and save those spectators. One to two seconds were quite exiting when waiting what happens. We had a luck, speed slowed down enough and we must just start accelerate our car again. After that those last kilometres weren´t so nice anymore, we also had big problem to stop the car after SS. Suprice was huge, when our time was fourth fastest in own class and 7th overall.

Last transport stages to Turku, about 30km was a challenge. Front disc was broken, rear brake sylinder leak, and handbrake was nearly powerless. With freewheel it needed extra forward – looking driving thru Turku city to rally HQ. We survived, only one redlights were too fast for us…

Results, 6th in own class, 9th overall in Historic and 18th overall between all those 161 cars was good result in fast summerroads.

Next time we are in rally 8. October when Historic rallyserie continue in Naantali, same region as Turku.
